The Department of Physical Education and Sports of Sumy State University

The Department of Physical Education and Sports offers a wide range of scientific, pedagogical and methodological directions.

They are implemented with the help of a comprehensive approach to solving educational, recreational and educative issues and focusing on functional orientation of physical exercises, their effective use for health promotion, active recreation and healthy lifestyle of students.

The faculty of the Department employs 20 full-time and 7 part-time teachers.

It includes PhDs and associate professors, 8 senior teachers, 12 Masters of Sports of the USSR and Ukraine, 1 International Master of Sports of the USSR and1 Honored Master of Sports of Ukraine.

The teachers of the Department of Physical Education and Sports are also managers in their sports specializations. They organize sporting and mass participation events, competitions, conduct specialized training sessions and offer consultations on the kind of sport they are specializing in.

In 2013, thanks to the scientific and sports activities held by the Department of Physical Education and Sports, Sumy State University has become a member of the International Association of Physical Education and Sport Universities.

In 2015 the senior teacher Nataliia Dolgova (PhD in Pedagogical Sciences) became a prizewinner of the IX Jerzy Giedroyc Competition.

She was awarded for the best diploma, Master's and PhD theses dedicated to the history and modern life of Poland and the Polish-Ukrainian relations. For her thesis called ‘Modernization of Physical Education and Sports in the University Education of Poland’ the SSU representative received not only a diploma, but also a special award.

In 2014, a new major called ‘Sport’ of 6.010202 training direction was opened at the Department of Physical Education and Sports.

The curriculum provides an enhanced training of future specialists. It offers special medical disciplines and methods of rehabilitation programs using the material and technical resources and the staff of SSU Medical Institute and its house care center. Students will have a chance to engage in the process of advanced studying of foreign languages, professional management and IT-technologies.

In the future the graduates of this major can apply for the job of a coach or a teacher in sports schools for children and youth, schools of high sports mastery and Olympic training. Also, the graduates can be sports managers and occupy leading positions in sports organizations.

In 2014 the International scientific and methodical conference called ‘Innovative technologies in career development system of specialists in physical education and sports’ took place at Sumy State University for the first time. Now SSU hosts this event every year.

The representatives of general and higher education of Ukraine, Russia, Poland, Moldova, and Romania actively take part in the conference. They discuss the problems of modernization of students’ physical education, usage of e-learning technologies in the career development system for specialists in physical education and sports, education quality improvement, modern methods of teaching children swimming, encouraging students to lead a healthy lifestyle, social, economic and regulatory principles of career development for specialists in physical education, rehabilitation and recreation of different layers of our society.

The Department of Physical Education and Sports provides sports activities for 6500 full-time students and organizes extracurricular activities for 2000 students in 62 sports clubs.

Also, about 500 foreign students are involved in these sport clubs.

The faculty of the Department consists of highly skilled athletes, who conduct workout sessions in 36 kinds of sports, including 29 Olympic sports. This enables the Department to train students-athletes for international and All-Ukrainian competitions.

Biathlon, skiing, athletics, swimming, rowing, canoeing, football, volleyball, handball, basketball, and table tennis are the most popular sports developed by SSU coaches and teachers.

The Department of Physical Education and Sports possesses 22 sports facilities.

There are gyms and workout rooms, a swimming pool, rowing and ski resorts in order to organize sport activities.

There is a house care center for athletes and a center for health and sports established at SSU in order to organize rehabilitation and recreational activities.

Due to SSU sports infrastructure the student athletes were able to take part in major sporting events.

2012 London Olympics (Taras Shelestiuk – bronze medalist in boxing), 2014 Winter Olympics (Vita and Valia Semerenko, Juliya Dzhyma – biathlon winners), 2013 Summer Universiade (Vitalii Korzh, Serhii Smelyk, Viktoriia Piatachenko – winners in athletics), 2015 Winter Universiade (Dmytro Rusinov – biathlon winner), 2015 World Universiade (Yurii Synytsia, Dmytro Bohdan – bronze medalists in volleyball; Bohdan Yadov, Tetiana Levytska – bronze medalists in judo), and 2015 European Games (Artem Khomula – bronze medalist in judo) belong to the biggest world sporting events.

SSU Sports Club “University”

On 30 August 1966, a sport section under the leadership of Y.K. Berest was created. Soon after that, the Sports Club headed by Y. K. Berest was founded.V. Kosiak, I. Verbliudov, A. Ivanov, A. Shepelev, M. Artiushenko and M. Piatakov played the great role in the life of Club.

SSU Sports Club of the Department of Physical Training had been existing till 1993, when in 2005 became the separated structural subdivision of SSU, headed by O.G. Levkovets. Now Y.B. Tokarev is the Head of the Club.

36 kinds of sport are developing in the Club, more than 76 sport sections are provided, including the major league teams. Moreover, 22 students of SSU Sports Club are prize winners of Olympic, World and European Championships. The Ukrainian national team that participates in the XXX Olympic Games in London included 3 students and postgraduates students of SSU. The XXII Winter Olympic Games in Sochi were represented by 6 SSU students and postgraduates. During these competitions gold medals in biathlon relay-race and bronze medal in boxing and biathlon sprint was received.

SSU belongs to three leaders of the corresponding category due to the III Ukrainian Sport Games results among the higher educational institutions. All in all, during the National Team Competitions "Championships of Ukraine" and "The First National Ukrainian Festival of Playing Sport" SSU got into ten of the best higher education institutions, and occupied the 7^th place in the rankings of all Ukrainian universities.
